53.001 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicant Eligibility:  State Governors' Committees on Employment of People with Disabilities, and national groups and individuals involved in promoting the employment of persons with disabilities may apply.

Beneficiary Eligibility:  People who are physically disabled, psychiatric survivors, and the mentally retarded will benefit.

53.001 PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

The President's Committee has been instrumental in bringing about improved national acceptance for employment of people who are physically disabled, psychiatric survivors, and mentally retarded. It operates the Job Accommodation Network (JAN), a toll-free phone service that provides information about accommodations for employees with disabilities and the employment provisions of the ADA. The Committee continues to expand its Business Leadership Network which is designed to stimulate best disability employment practices in order to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to enter and succeed in the workforce. The President's Committee co-sponsors with the Department of Defense the Workforce Recruitment Program. This program recruits students with disabilities from over 130 colleges and universities for summer internships. Additionally the committee provides leadership and guidance to State, local and private sector partners for the establishment of High School/High Tech (HS/HT) programs and Youth Leadership Forums (YLF) in local communities. HS/HT encourages students with disabilities to consider careers in engineering, science and high technology fields. YLF is a unique career leadership program for high school juniors and seniors with disabilities. The President's Committee provides information, printed materials, a Website, videos, speeches, training, and tailored outreach programs that are instrumental in successfully implementing the ADA at the local, business and community levels.

Authorization:  Executive Order 12640.

Regulations, Guidelines, and Literature:  The President's Committee's informational programs include publications dealing with employment issues, job accommodation, the American's with Disabilities Act, and data related to employment of people with disabilities.

Length and Time Phasing of Assistance:  Not applicable.

Uses and Use Restrictions:  To facilitate the communication coordination, and promotion of public and private efforts to enhance the employment of people with disabilities. The Committee provides information, training, and technical assistance to America's business leaders, organized labor, rehabilitation and service providers, advocacy organizations, families and individuals with disabilities. The President's Committee provides leadership in the effort to eliminate employment barriers to people with physical, mental, and communications disabilities. To achieve its goals, the Committee works closely with Governor's Committees in the States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, DC, and Guam; with Mayor's Committees throughout the United States; with volunteers who serve on one of the six standing sub-committees or on special task forces; and with disability community leaders.
