Applicant Eligibility: Grants may be made to accredited public or private nonprofit schools of medicine, schools of osteopathic medicine, teaching hospitals, or graduate medical education programs.
Beneficiary Eligibility: Any accredited schools of medicine, schools of osteopathic medicine, public or private nonprofit teaching hospitals and graduate medical education programs.
Credentials/Documentation: Costs will be determined by DHHS Regulations 45 CFR, Part 92 and 45 CFR 74, Subpart Q.

This year BHPr has decided to use Adobe Acrobat to publish the grants documents on the Web page. Award Procedure: Notification is made in writing by a Notice of Grant Award issued from the Headquarters Office.
Deadlines: Application deadlines can be obtained via the Internet at: www.hrsa.gov/bhpr/grants.html.
Range of Approval/Disapproval Time: From 4 to 6 months after receipt of applications.
Appeals: Appeals are available only to grantees.
Renewals: At the end of the initial project period, competing continuation applications may be submitted for up to five 5 years.
Criteria for Selecting Proposals: Competing applications are reviewed by nonfederal consultants. The Secretary of the Department will approve projects which best promote the purposes of Section 777(b) of the Public Health Service Act. The Secretary will consider, among other factors: (1) The extent to which the proposed training program will prepare physicians, dentists and behavioral and mental health professionals to perform the research, teaching, administrative and clinical duties of a faculty member specializing in geriatrics; (2) the degree to which the proposed project plan adequately provides for meeting the project requirements set forth in Section 57.4105; (3) the administrative, management and resource capability of the applicant to carry out the proposed project in a cost-effective manner; (4) the potential for the applicant to continue the program without Federal support after completion of the requested project period; and (5) the extent to which the project will increase the number of geriatric fellowship and retraining positions available for individuals who want to prepare for academic careers in geriatric medicine, geriatric behavioral and mental health, and dentistry.
Examples of Funded Projects: Grants are made to accredited public or private nonprofit schools of medicine, teaching hospitals, schools of osteopathic medicine and graduate medical education programs for postdoctoral training. The funded programs are with Boston University, Duke University, Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, University of Michigan, University of North Texas and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Of the eight programs, seven are 2-year programs, and the UCLA program is a 1-year retraining program.

Length and Time Phasing of Assistance: Project periods are for 5 years.
Uses and Use Restrictions: A grant may be made to meet the cost of a project which will propose: 1) A 1-year retraining program in geriatrics for: (a) physicians who are faculty in departments of internal medicine, family medicine (including osteopathic general practice), gynecology, geriatrics, and behavioral or mental health at schools of medicine and osteopathic medicine; (b) dentists who are faculty members at schools of dentistry or at hospital departments or dentistry; and (c) behavioral or mental health professionals who are faculty members in departments of behavioral or mental health; and/or 2) a 2-year internal medicine of family medicine fellowship program providing emphasis in geriatrics which shall be designed to provide training in clinical geriatrics and geriatrics research for: (a) physicians who have completed graduate medical education programs in internal medicine, family medicine (including osteopathic general practice), behavioral or mental health, neurology, gynecology, or rehabilitation medicine; (b) dentists who have demonstrated a commitment to an academic career and who have completed postdoctoral dental training, including postdoctoral dental education programs or who have relevant advanced training or experience; and (c) behavioral or mental health professionals who have completed graduate medical education programs in behavioral or mental health; 3) be staffed, or enter into an agreement with an institution staffed, by full-time or part-time teaching behavioral mental health professionals who have experience or training in geriatric behavioral or mental health; 4) be based in a graduate medical education program in internal medicine or family medicine or in a department of geriatrics or behavioral or mental health; 5) provide training in geriatrics and expose to the physical and mental disabilities of elderly individuals through a variety of service rotations, such as geriatric consultation services, acute care services, dental services, geriatric behavioral or mental health units, day and home care programs, rehabilitation services, extended care facilities, geriatric ambulatory care and comprehensive evaluation units, and community care programs for elderly mentally retarded individuals, and 6) provide training in geriatrics through one or both of the training options described in the section on "Eligible Projects."
Reports: A progress report must be submitted for the second or subsequent budget period within the approved project period. Financial Status Reports are required within 90 days after the end of each budget period. A final progress report and final Financial Status Report must be submitted within 90 days after the end of the project period.
Audits: In accordance with the provisions of OMB Circular No. A-133, "Audits of States, Local Governments, and Non-Profit Organizations," nonfederal entities that receive financial assistance of $300,000 or more in Federal awards will have a single or a program-specific audit conducted for that year.
Records: Financial records must be kept available for 3 years after submission of expenditure report, and 3 years after final disposition of non-expendable property. If questions remain, such as those raised as a result of audit, records must be retained until the matter is resolved.
